REGULAR CARE FOR A GOLDEN RETRIEVER |
HYGENE The coat should be brushed daily, checking for presence of ticks, which can pass on the potentially deadly disease of Piroplasmosis. If your puppy is fatigued, feverish, has no appetite and his urine is dark (tea coloured) he must be treated immediately!!! It is a question of hours!!! Inspect his ears regularly also, if there are unpleasant odours or dark secretions, consult your vet. |
| WORMING Your puppy will have been wormed before leaving the breeder. It is recommended thet he is wormed again at 4 months, then every month up to the 6th month From then on he must be wormed every 6 months until the end of his life. Your vet will advise you on the worming products available. |

THE TATOO Your puppy will have been tatooed or chipped but it is up to you to send off the `registration of tatoo ` card to the Société Centrale Canine so that the change of owner and address can be officially recorded: It's your only chance of finding your dog if you lose it or it runs away. |
| VACCINATIONS It is obligatory tha t your puppy has been vaccinated against Carrés Disease, Hepatitis and Parvovirus. You must arrange the 2nd injection 4 to 6 weeks after the 1st . Avoid public contact and other dogs until 2 weeks after the 2nd injection has been given and until the puppy is well immunised against any contagion. Do not put your puppy on the floor in the vets waiting room, as many poorly dogs have already passed that way. |
HIP DYSPLASIA Your puppy's mother and father have been tested and declared exempt from hip dyslasia. You can have your puppy xrayed from 12 months. Until your puppy is 6/7 months old he should not be over-exercised. He should not be encouraged to jump or to stand on his rear legs. Long walks and climbing stairs must wait until his bones are well fused. Swimming however can only do him good. Keep a check on your puppy's health. The joints of an overweight puppy suffer enormously. EYE TESTS Your puppy's parents will also have undergone tests for eye problems such as atrophy of the retina and hereditary cataract problems. These eye tests should be carried out every year and can begin at around 9 months.

CONFIRMATION For your puppy's birth certificate to be exchanged for its pedigree, he needs to pass an examination of conformity to breed, which can take place from the age of 15 months. Your puppy can pass this control either at a dog exposition or at the Annual Nationale d'Elevage which takes place in September. Visit our section on confirmation
