PLANTS THAT ARE DANGEROUS FOR GOLDEN RETRIEVERS

We all know that, as for the human beings, some plants have harmful properties, even dangerous for our dogs. In certain cases, these toxic properties can prove fatal for dogs and particularly for puppies that chew indiscriminately and are more susceptible to their effects. You will find below, a list of quite common plants along with their effects. As you will see, consumption of, or contact with some plants can have fatal results even in small quantities,

 

 

 

 AZALEA

Consumed in its entirety, the plant paralyses muscles, including the heart and depresses the central nervous system. Sometimes mortal in quantity.

PARADISIER : the Pods.

Sickness, vomiting and diarrhoea.

 

 

CANNA : All of the plant.

Sensation of intense burning and irritation of the mouth and the stomach.

 DAFFODILS: The bulb.

Vomiting and chronic diarrhoea, shivers and convulsions, sometimes mortal.

 

 

 DAPHNE :

All of the plant.

Burning and ulceration of the stomach and intestines. Diarrhoea and vomiting.

 IVY: Leaves and berries

General excitement, respiratory difficulties, coma.

 

 

 IRIS :
Leaves, roots and bulbs.

Temporary chronic digestive upset.

 CASTOR-OIL Plant Common : All of the plant.

Burning sensation. Consumption of more than 2 seeds can be fatal.

 

 

 HOLLY: Berries.

Vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness.

JASMINE Nudiflorum
All of the plant.

Thirst, dilation of the pupils, the reddening of the skin, cranial problems, high blood pressure, acceleration of the pulse, convulsions, frenzy, coma.

 

 

 LAUTANA : Berries

Gastro-intestinal irritation, muscular weakness and motor problems. Sometimes fatal.

 LAUREL ROSE : All of the plant.

Sickness, bloody diarrhoea, weak and irregular pulse, paralysis

 

 

  POINSETTIA :Leaves and stalks.  

Diarrhoea, abdominal cramps. The sap is particularly toxic, rubbed on the eyes it can cause blindness.

 SUMAC :

Leaves.

Skin irritation

 

 

 PRIVET: All of the plant.

Vomiting, diarrhoea, chronic irritation of the digestive tract and of the nervous system.

 RENONCULE : All of the plant.

Irritation of the stomach, diarrhoea. Absorbed in large quantities this plant can cause convulsions

 

 

 RHUBARB : Leaves.

Vomiting, chronic abdominal pain, muscular cramp. In large quantities, can cause coma and death.

 GLYCINE :All of the plant.

Chronic vomiting, abdominal pains and diarrhoea.

 

 


Knowing of the potentially dangerous plants should not dissuade you from taking your Golden Retriever on holiday. Many of their breed live long, happy and healthy lives in the countryside all year long. And as a general rule, our four-pawed friends have been taught by their mothers which plants are beneficial to them.
