The Confirmation
Golden Retrievers may be presented for the examination of confirmation from the age of 15 months. There is no upper limit, so if your dog appears a little immature, allow a few months to pass before presenting him. You will, by doing this, avoid an adjournment, which the judge may demand, to await your dogs maturing. If your dogs movement is not correct, the judge may ask you to proceed with an examination of the hips (x ray) and postpone judgement until in receipt of the results. The confirmation consists of presenting your dog to a judge who is accustomed to the breed, at a canine exhibition or at a show organised by a regional canine society.
The expert will compare the dog to the standard of the breed, measure his height, assure at his teeth are well placed, that the colour of his eyes and coat are of the required shades, that the bone structure conforms, that the character if well balanced and sympathetic. For males, he will check that the testicles are in place. There are other points controlled in the examination, which are defined in the standard. |

During this examination the judge must be able to examine the dogs teeth. It is therefore necessary for your dog to be used to strangers putting their fingers into his mouth, ask your friends to assist in this. The examiner must also be able to see and read the tattoo in the dogs ear or on its thigh. This is imperative. Above all, make sure that the tattoo is readable and if need be, cut any hairs covering it and clean the area. If this is not sufficient, ask your vet to tattoo the other ear.
